Firstly I would like to make clear that I do not use nails anywhere on one of my decks. Not in constructing the supporting framework, not in securing the deck boards to the sub frame and not in building the handrails. No nails anywhere!
Although nails are cheaper and quicker to install than screws nails provide significantly less holding power when compared to a screw of comparable length.
With the quality and range of specialist screws suitable for outdoor use the only excuse from an installer’s point of view is that they are cheaper and quicker to install!
However from the client’s point of view the use of decking screws has one significant advantage as they allow decking boards to be removed and re-laid with ease. Removal of nailed decking boards is much more problematic and invariable leads to damage and the need to install a new board.
When screwing down deck boards the main requirement is that the decking screw used is twice the board thickness For example 32mm thick deck boards require 63mm deck screws ,25mm thick boards 50mm screws.
The range of specialist decking screws I use include Fastenmaster, Evolution and Rapier
In addition to deck screws other fixings used include Galvanised bolts & nuts, Fastenmaster Heavy duty wood screws.
