Site Preparation

The rule is simple “start as you mean to go on”

Taking time to check and set out of both the line and level of your deck will ensure fewer problems later on in the building process.

Within the area of the deck any vegetation needs to be dealt with. In the case of a small area of grass this may simply involve cutting and turning the top layer of turf and then laying weed suppression membrane to prevent further growth. For larger areas of grass a turf cutter is an ideal machine to carry out this work

This woven geotextile fabric serves two purposes:

  1. It prevents weeds growing up under the deck and hence eliminates future maintenance problems.

  1. It allows rainwater to percolate through the surface and drain away

The use of plastic sheeting is not recommended as it will not allow the water to drain through it leading drainage problems underneath your deck.
